When you see a hard bottom like gravel, chunk rock or shell beds, that bottom will be thick and yellow. Whereas when you pass over a softer muddier bottom, the bottom will seem more translucent or darker red or blue.
Is Structure Scan the same as side scan?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Structure scan IS side scan. HDS series by itself does not have side imaging without the structure scan add on. If you get Structure Scan, you get both down scan and side scan.

The side scan allows you to see that the fish is toward the side. The Lowrance 3D Structure Scan, on the other hand, gives you a picture of the fish in the water column. The Lowrance Trackback feature is used to go back in memory to make disappeared image reappear. The Trackback is a good feature as you can’t always spot a fish right on the spot.
Can you see the fish in the Lowrance down scan?
This is a full screen of the new Lowrance Down Scan and you can see the fish around the brush. The picture above is a tree on the bottom and there are NO fish in it anywhere. With the HDS 8 and the HDS 10, you can split the screen up to four ways.
What is the best sensitivity for my Lowrance unit?
Be sure to set your lowrance unit on the “shallow water” setting as anything else is for 600ft+. -4% auto sensitivity seems to be the best. Transducer — most units come with the 83/200 transducer. Be sure to select the appropriate one in your settings.
