What is the Internet of Things?

It seems that we are always on the brink of a revolution, and just like the industrial revolution happened more than a hundred years ago, it seems we are on the forefront of another – the digital revolution.

Often called the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’, this relies heavily on the Internet of Things (IoT), which has developed over the last decade or two, following the birth of the internet and the tech boom.

With many companies working in the area, such as RS Components, to help businesses understand it, just what is the IoT? And how could it help?

Let us break it down a little for you below.

What is the IoT?

The most basic definition of the IoT can be found in the Oxford Dictionary. Here it is defined as:

‘A proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.’

This means, it is the concept of being able to connect a number of physical devices via the internet, which will then allow them to communicate with each other.

How Does it Work?

This is done through a number of built-in sensors. These sensors are often found within the devices, which then connect to an Internet of Things platforms. This then allows data to integrate from the different devices, which is then analysed and the most relevant and valuable information is shared with the applications needed to address specific needs.

This sophisticated technology is extremely powerful and allows many devices to connect, which in turn is becoming the driving force behind the fourth revolution that we mentioned prior. But how will this help?

What are the Benefits?

From the home to businesses, the IoT comes with a huge number of benefits, which will impact on the way we live and work in the future. In fact, some are already around today – you only have to look at how people work remotely and how Amazon’s Alexa has taken over many households.

Other ways it’ll benefit the world we live in, include:

  • Helps to monitor businesses
  • Improve customer experiences
  • Save time and money for everyone
  • Enhance the productivity of employees
  • Assist with health advancements
  • Improve the running of a home
  • Help make shopping quicker and easier
  • Generate more revenue for companies
  • Make work more flexible for people

These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how it will help with everyone’s everyday lives. Some of them we don’t even know of yet. But, what we do know is, the IoT is here, and it’s about to change the world.
